These flashy perennials come in many different colors and shapes, and they are San Francisco&#8217;s official flower. Near <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/08\/conservatory-of-flowers-2\/\">the Conservatory of Flowers<\/a> in Golden Gate Park, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/homeandgarden\/article\/Hello-dahlia-S-F-s-official-flower-in-bloom-3255773.php\" target=\"_blank\">the Dahlia Dell<\/a> has many kinds on display. In fact, they&#8217;re native to Mexico and Central America. Three dozen naturally occurring dahlia species readily crossbreed to create thousands of hybrids. To grow dahlias, provide rich soil, full sun, and regular water. <a href=\"http:\/\/voices.yahoo.com\/garden-maintenance-tip-deadhead-flowers-344129.html\" target=\"_blank\">Deadhead<\/a> old flowers to keep new ones coming. In cold areas, tuberous dahlia roots need protection from winter freezes. Its sunny flowers provide spectacular contrast to its black foliage.
