During this rest period, they need less <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/care\/details\/water.html\">water<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/care\/details\/fertilizer.html\">fertilizer<\/a>. Winter dormancy mimics a dry season in the orchids&#8217; native habitats.<\/p>\n<p>Orchids like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/identify\/orchids\/cattleya.html\">Cattleya<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/identify\/orchids\/dendrobium.html\">Dendrobium<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/identify\/orchids\/oncidium.html\">Oncidium<\/a> in the pictures below won\u2019t bloom without a dry period. Cut back on watering in autumn. During winter, wait until their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/blog\/2009\/11\/12\/pseudobulb\/\">pseudobulbs<\/a> start to shrivel, and then water thoroughly. Reduce fertilizer, also. Always keep <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/care\/details\/humidity.html\">humidity<\/a> levels high.<\/p>\n<p>Popular orchid varieties like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/identify\/orchids\/phalaenopsis.html\">Phals<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/blog\/2012\/05\/15\/lady-slippers\/\">Lady Slippers<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/17\/pleurothallids\/\">Pleurothallids<\/a> do not go dormant. With winter&#8217;s lower <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/care\/details\/light.html\">light<\/a> and cooler <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/care\/details\/temperature.html\">temps<\/a>, however, it\u2019s ok to give them less water. Don\u2019t let them dry too much.
