Orchid care changes with the seasons, and many orchids begin dormancy<\/a> as winter approaches. During this rest period, they need less water<\/a> and fertilizer<\/a>. Winter dormancy mimics a dry season in the orchids’ native habitats.<\/p>\n

Orchids like the Cattleya<\/a>, Dendrobium<\/a>, and\u00a0Oncidium<\/a> in the pictures below won\u2019t bloom without a dry period. Cut back on watering in autumn. During winter, wait until their pseudobulbs<\/a> start to shrivel, and then water thoroughly. Reduce fertilizer, also. Always keep humidity<\/a> levels high.<\/p>\n

Popular orchid varieties like Phals<\/a>, Lady Slippers<\/a>, and Pleurothallids<\/a> do not go dormant. With winter’s lower light<\/a> and cooler temps<\/a>, however, it\u2019s ok to give them less water. Don\u2019t let them dry too much. When temps warm in the spring, resume their regular watering schedule.<\/p>\n
