Its strange flowers resemble elaborate birds in flight. Its little, pencil-like leaves turn purplish-red in the sun, making it look like a pointy, colorful hedgehog. In the wild, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/identify\/orchids\/dendrobium.html\">Dendrobium<\/a> striolatum<\/em> lives attached to rocky cliffs in the states of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.australias.guide\/nsw\/facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New South Wales<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.australias.guide\/vic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Victoria<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.australias.guide\/tas\/facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tasmania<\/a>. Our orchid is happily <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/care\/details\/outdoor.html\">growing outdoors<\/a> on the Northern California coast.<\/p>\n<p><a refused to flower for the first six years I had it, but has since become a very reliable bloomer. It responds well to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/care\/details\/fertilizer.html\">doses of compost or worm castings<\/a>, and receives regular <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/care\/details\/water.html\">water<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/care\/details\/humidity.html\">good humidity, and strong air movement<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/29\/let-the-sunshine-in\/\">Full sun<\/a> turns its thin leaves a deep purplish-red, ensuring that it&#8217;s always a colorful garden denizen, even when not in bloom. This species doesn&#8217;t seem to need <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/care\/details\/potting.html\">repotting<\/a> like most orchids. I rarely repot it unless its unruly mass overflows the flowerpot. In the wild, it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/blog\/2016\/11\/06\/orchids-on-the-rocks\/\">a lithophyte, growing with its roots clinging to rocks<\/a>. The species&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/blog\/2020\/08\/07\/why-do-orchid-names-change\/\">name was changed<\/a> from <em>Dockrillia striolata<\/em> to <em>Dendrobium striolatum<\/em>. Fortunately, the common name, Streaked Rock Orchid, remains the same.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Dendrobium_striolatum_4_1000px.jpg\"><img
