href=\"https:\/\/orchidspecies.com\/elleantamethestinus.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Elleanthus amethystinus,<\/em><\/a> a fascinating orchid from the Andes. Out of bloom, the plant looks like a small clump of bamboo, with pointed leaves on thin stems. But when clusters of bright pink flowers emerge, it&#8217;s obviously an orchid. The charming blossoms boast fringed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/blog\/2020\/04\/16\/lovely-orchid-lips\/\">lips<\/a>, and resemble little joyous birds. Each flower is only about 1\/8 inch (3 mm,) but with dozens of clusters of blooms, the plant creates an impressive display.<\/p>\n<p><a elevations in Venezuela, Colombia, and Peru, this species seems perfectly happy living <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/care\/details\/outdoor.html\">outdoors<\/a> on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/care\/details\/humidity.html\">foggy<\/a> Northern California coast. It&#8217;s a reliable bloomer, and can stay in flower up to two months. Each cluster may have a dozen or more flowers open at a time. This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/blog\/category\/cool-growers\/\">cool grower<\/a> is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/11\/terrestrial-orchids\/\">terrestrial<\/a> which likes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/29\/let-the-sunshine-in\/\">morning sun<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/care\/details\/water.html\">regular watering<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aos.org\/explore\/elleanthus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Other members of the Elleanthus genus<\/a> live in tropical Latin America, and also feature masses of brightly colored blooms. They&#8217;re related to Sobralias, although <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/blog\/2022\/12\/15\/big-bold-sobralia-blooms\/\">my Sobralia species<\/a>, with flowers as large as 10 inches (25 cm,) illustrates how different these relatives can be. Elleanthus are unusual orchids with delightful colors.
