{"id":5916,"date":"2010-12-10T13:03:07","date_gmt":"2010-12-10T21:03:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/blog\/?p=5916"},"modified":"2011-01-06T16:08:11","modified_gmt":"2011-01-07T00:08:11","slug":"australian-orchid-returns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/10\/australian-orchid-returns\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian Orchid Returns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australian conservationists have had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/blog\/2010\/11\/05\/rare-australian-orchid-relocated\/\">notable success lately<\/a>, and now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/environment\/conservation\/lazarus-orchid-rises-from-the-soil-once-more-20101206-18muq.html?from=age_sb\" target=\"_blank\">they&#8217;ve rediscovered an extinct orchid species<\/a>. The Robust Greenhood Orchid, Pterostylis valida, is a long-lost cousin of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboutorchids.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/25\/pterostylis\/\">the Greenhood that I grow<\/a>. Believed extinct since 1941, it&#8217;s been rediscovered in an area outside of Melbourne. It&#8217;s no coincidence that the new-found plants are growing on land owned by the conservation group <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bushheritage.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bush Heritage Australia<\/a>. They&#8217;ve gone to great lengths to purchase important ecological sites, and remove invasive, nonnative species doing damage to Aussie natives. Rather than becoming <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rabbits_in_Australia\" target=\"_blank\">rabbit food<\/a> or overshadowed by fast growing weeds, the species has been able to bloom again. It&#8217;s a rare pleasure to find that something has come back from extinction.
